The region stretches some 35 miles from Mâcon southerly towards Lyon. The area of Beaujolais adjoining the crus in the north has been given “Village” status, and further south, towards Lyon is where the simplest Beaujolais is made. The whole area has beautiful scenery, with small winding roads, gently rounded hills and small villages, normally dominated by their church. The wine of the region is mainly red, from the Gamay grape, and is quite different from the wines of the northern Burgundy area. The wine tends to be purple in colour with a fruity bouquet, and many of the wines are drunk young.
