The Mâconnais vineyards are spread around the edge of Mâcon. A tour around the Route des Vins will take you to some of the best wines in the region and will provide you with some stunning and dramatic scenery as you drive around the winding roads. The village of Fuissé and its neighbouring Pouilly, in the south of the region, make the most famous and the most expensive wines of Mâconnais. Most of the wines in the area are whites and they are to be drunk young. In 1971, a new appellation of St-Véran was created, which is grown on a mixture of limestone and the sandier granite soils in the area.
