The region stretches some 35 miles from Mâcon southerly towards Lyon. There are ten individual crus, which are situated in the north of the region. The whole area has beautiful scenery, with small winding roads, gently rounded hills and small villages, normally dominated by their church.
The wine of the region is mainly red, from the Gamay grape, and is quite different from the wines of the northern Burgundy area. The wine tends to be purple in colour with a fruity bouquet. Many of the wines are drunk young, but the more powerful crus, such as Moulin-à-Vent, will improve with age.
